Graduate Spotlight: Lebza TheVillan Joins Kunye Records as A&R Lead

Lebza TheVillan

South African DJ and producer Lebza TheVillan is stepping into a powerful new role as A&R (Artists and Repertoire) lead at Kunye Records, marking a major milestone in both his career and the Afro House movement.

The news was shared via a personal video on social media, where Lebza expressed his excitement:

“Thrilled to be diving into A&R and music content for @kuneyrecords. Shout out to @shimza.dj for trust (sic) me. Let’s tell the story of Afro House.”

But behind this moment is a story of dedication, growth, and academic foundation. A Diploma in Media Practice graduate from Boston Media House, Lebza - born Lebogang Thubakgale in Ivory Park, Midrand - has always paired talent with strategy. His formal training in marketing and media gave him the tools to not only make great music but to understand the industry as a whole. That balance of creativity and business acumen now finds a perfect match in his new A&R role.

Founded in 2020 by celebrated DJ and producer Shimza, Kunye Records - meaning “together” in Xhosa - has quickly become a pioneering force in Afro House, hosting standout events across the globe and collaborating with genre defining artists like: Louie Vega, Mele, and Rodriguez Jr., while developing stars such as Sun-El Musician, Thakzin, and Blanka Mazimela.

Lebza brings a wealth of experience to the label. He started producing beats at the age of 13 and has carved out a signature sound that blends Afro House, jazz, hip-hop, and Amapiano. His discography includes acclaimed tracks like Gift of House, Nanini, Netha, and Voiceless, as well as fan favourites Possible, Wena, and Sosha.

Beyond production, he’s a familiar voice on radio, having made his mark as resident DJ on YFM’s YTKO and Krunch Time slots. Influenced by the likes of DJ Fresh, Euphonik, and DJ Kent, he brings both legacy respect and forward-thinking vision to his work. His deep appreciation for vinyl culture and crate-digging underscores his commitment to the roots of house music.

Now as A&R lead, Lebza is set to play a defining role in discovering new talent and shaping Kunye’s musical direction. His academic grounding from Boston Media House helps position him as more than just and artist – he’s a strategic thinker, curator, and cultural connector.

This isn’t just a new title; it’s a statement. Lebza’s move into A&R represents a broader mission: to amplify the Afro House narrative and elevate African Voices on global stages.

As he embarks on this exciting chapter, Lebza TheVillan stands as a testament to how talent, education, passion, and persistence can converge to drive both personal success and cultural impact.
